Here is just a small list of some of the many great Athenian heroes that excel in athletics.
Pantakles won at Stadion in 696 BC. as well as in 696 BC. He also won the Diaulos in 692 BC.
Kylon was the victor of Diaulos in 640BC
Kallias II was a victor for many years(500 BC, 496 BC, and 492 BC) in the Tethrippon event.
Kimon was also quite good at Tehrippon, he won it in the year 536 BC.
The year after Kimon won he was beaten by Militidates in the same event.
As you can see most of the victors are men, this is because only unmarried women were allowed to compete in athletics. Married women weren't even allowed to watch these competitions. Young boys however were also not allowed to compete. They determine if they are allowed to compeat depending on either the number of teeth they have or amount of facial hair.
